Nine Ranged Magical Weapons

Through September Attronarch of Attronarch's Athenaeum is hosting September 2024's RPG Blog Carnival!  The theme is Wondrous Weapons and Damning Dweomers. This post shares a number of magical weapons which are relatively rare, missile weapons!

  1. Firestar: 5 throwing knives +1, found in a custom belt with five sheaths on it for them.   doing 1d3 damage, +1 fire damage for each other Firestar knife already in the target.  When a third Firestar dagger is embedded in the same target, these knives explode, doing 3d6 fire damage, or double damage to zombies, and re-appear in their sheaths, while the sheaths of destroyed daggers turn black.  At dawn each day, any missing but intact daggers return to their sheaths.  Made for High Hill Halflings by Dwarven pyrotheurges during the war against the Zombie King.
  2. Radiant Short Bow: A +1 shortbow, +2 against undead.  When the bowstring is pulled back, an arrow appears where expected, but made of solid light, and illuminating an area 10 ft. in radius.  It does double damage to incorporeal undead.
  3. Percussive Bolas +2:  Do 1d4+2 blunt damage.  When these bolas strike a target that moves on two to four legs, the target must make a dexterity check or fall prone, with at least two of its legs bound.  It does triple damage against constructs.
  4. Keen Hatchets +1: These very sharp hatchets do 1d6+1 slashing damage.  If a natural 19 or 20 was rolled to hit, they inflict an additional 1d3+1 bleeding damage next round.
  5. Spear of Jah-ro-ko: This thick shafted, broad-headed spear has a pair of whistling holes on either side of the spear head.  It is an incredibly heavy long spear +1, requiring 15 strength to wield.  Once per day, when thrown at a wall within 60 ft., the whistle holes let out a trumpeting sound, that hangs in the air for a minute even after the spear impacts the wall. An outdoor wall hit this way by the spear has a base 4-in-6 chance of collapsing, a fortress wall has a 2-in-6 chance, and an underground wall has a 1-in-6 chance.  The span of wall collapsed in this way is 2d6x5 feet wide and half that tall, and 2d6+5 feet deep, centered on the point of impact.
  6. Trident of Oposidius: This trident of the sea god is a +1 trident, that does +1d6 electrical damage to all creatures within 5 ft. of the target when the wielder rolls a natural 20 on the attack roll.  If wielded by an aquatic creature or a priest of Oposidius, it becomes a +3 trident, and does +3d6 electrical damage to all creatures within 15 ft. of the target when the wielder rolls a natural 18-20 on the attack roll.  Further, the trident will swim back to the last aquatic creature or priest of Oposidius to throw it, if able to.
  7. Ravasgoerny's Befuddling Throwing Dagger +1: This throwing dagger is favored by dwarven priests of Ravasgoerny Konulepto.  A target hit by this dagger must save or have this dagger become embedded in them and go insubstantial to them.  They then fall under the effects of a confusion spell until the dagger is removed.  The dagger will fall out after one turn.
  8. Sling of Giant Slaying: This sling appears to be a sling +1, +3 vs. giants and gigantic creatures. Additionally, slings hitting giants or giant animals instead do 1d20 damage.  On an unmodified attack roll of a natural 20, such creatures fall unconscious for 1d6+1 turns.
  9. Silencing Chalikar: A metal halo, razor sharp on the outer edge.  Inflicts 1d6+2 damage.  The target struck must save, or become silenced, as though affected by a silence spell projecting one inch beyond what they touch.  If the chalikar has not been picked up for a turn, it starts chirping increasingly loudly every eight seconds.

On Names

Note : There are a lot of external links in this post. None of them should be affiliate links If they are, please let me know . Note2 : This has been bouncing around in my brain informally for a while, but putting it to pixel was prompted by Rook’s post on names on Beneath Foreign Planets as part of the RPG Blog Carnival .  There’s a lot of great material that comes from these prompts. I encourage you, dear reader, to check that out. Note3 : Link to the GDoc version this post was originally composed in. On Names One of the holes new Game Masters fall into while playing D&D-esque games is names. I’ll start with random NPC names first, to get the subject out of the way:  Make a d20 or d100 list of names for each gender, and for families.  Either stick it on the fourth panel of your DM screen, or pre-roll five of each, and stick those lists on your fourth panel. If you need a list of real world names, use an onomastikon .   Onomastikon “What is an onomasticon?” you ask, in Engli

How I Generate Home Brew Fantasy Towns Quickly

I was prompted to write this by an article about world building  ( https://ofdiceanddragons.com/rpg-carnival-world-building/ ). One of the challenges of a  gamemaster (GM) is spending time building things that are useful in play.  From that  point of view, after sketching out the world in thirty words, it seems more productive to me to focus on the places the player characters are most likely to go.   Generally, for a sandbox style exploration game in the West Marches style, I want it to be some sort of town or small city.  A village is too small to do more than provide food and fodder, and maybe shelter in a farmer’s barn.  A large city can be an interesting setting, but is probably a little too large for a new GM to start with, even though it basically extrapolates on what’s outlined here. Why? In our elf games, we typically focus on going to wild or hostile places to bring something back or handle a threat.  We don’t really spend much time in town.  So why do I bother doing this? H

Spell Research: A Hexflower

As part of an RPG Discord group's writing prompt, I wrote a hexflower for spell research.  It's a draft, but if there's any interest, I'll turn it into something a little more formal and post it on Itch.io or DrivethruRPG. Here's the link to the Google Doc, for now: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1m-EiGPc3etQd7-xIu7qCll10Fd9pJx-6juqWyyLLGOM/edit?usp=sharing Here's the raw images, as a teaser: Spell Research Hexflower OSR Spell Research Navigation Hex d20 Spell Research Navigation Hex
