Rifts: Terror on the Dark Frontier: Session 18

 << Previously

PCs

  • Anthony "Loco" Riaz (SAMAS pilot) - A street rat captured and raised by the Coalition, now in his late 20s, and a fugitive SAMAS pilot from CS El Dorado, wanted for stealing his SAMAS suit, Stella, along with some other things.  He fled north towards Castle Refuge, and joined with Shan, Layla, Faith, and Midnight.
  • Layla Lacoi (DB Mystic) - A tall dimensional mystic being with a bit of a catfish face.  Her gentle demeanor belies how powerful she is.
  • Midnight (Psi-stalker variant) - A dark and mysterious stranger, riding a strange horse.  He seems to have influence over lightning, and is a man who lives off the land.
  • Faith Macavoy (covert Psi-ghost) - A non-descript vagabond woman, who seems to be quite capable and full of supplies.
  • Shan Medsans (Cyber-doc, I think) - A hardcore cyberdoc apparently from a long line of traveling healers, renowned enough to know Erin Tarn personally.  Her clinic is in an upgraded Mountaineer ATV, traveling around to help those in need.  She has helped Tony, both healing him and repairing his SAMAS.  He has, in return taken to staying with her, and guarding her.  Her nephew is its dedicated driver, although Shan can also drive.
  • Jordan Moore (Crazy and an actor) - He can't handle being bored, and likes to shoot things.

NPCs

  • Paruuku is the woman whose uncle is the tribal administrator for the Comanche, whom we rescued from the worm wraiths.
  • Ardyn is the man who was with her when we  rescued them from the worm wraiths.
  • Scott Bernard is a soldier and pilot with a mission to kick the alien Invid off of his Earth.
  • Lancer is a military intelligence expert.
  • Annie LaBelle is a teenager who has been fighting with the local resistance since before she was a teen.
  • Lunk is a huge protoculture and conventional mechanic.
  • Marlene Rush, a.k.a. Ariel is a human-form Invid who has devoted herself to helping the human resistance.
  • Kent is a Golden Retriever dog boy operating out of Fort Comanche.

We start with Jordan Moore, an actor and a Crazy--that is, a person with brain augments that give them "mind over matter" abilities, but apparently at the cost of significant neurodivergence.  He is enjoying a beer at a bar when he meets Kent, a Golden Retriever dog boy, who asks if he's interested in a job with the Tomorrow Legion.   Jordan, not having any other current prospects, is game.  Kent brings him to Erin Tarn, who recruits him for 1,000 creds a week to be Kent's bodyguard while he goes to track down Shan and her group.

They go north from Fort Comanche to Emporia, which is very much a technological city of thousand, and very open, full of d-bees.  They'd probably be massacred if they Coalition came by.

A Trimador mechanic helps them out a bit, and lets them know where Shan's group went, and how badly they damaged their ATV's undercarriage.

Kent and Jordan find themselves in a particular predicament.  Kent's been driving his Big Boss, and they pull up into the remains of a battlefield.

The Camera shifts to the Genesis Pit.  The group gets to the hive.

Scott lets us know there's not much more he can do, and says his goodbyes to us, and to Marlene.

Marlene lets us know she's going to trigger a release of Protoculture energy from the protoculture furnace energy being released by the explosion of the Reflex warhead.  We're going to have to figure out how to harness that release of energy.  Then she walks off to the hive nearby.

We fidget and try to hide ourselves for a few minutes, and then Marlene triggers the Reflex warhead.  It washes over us, like nothing we've ever felt before, and definitely not like a mushroom cloud enclosed in an underground cavern.

We get assaulted by some armored scouts and shock troopers as the wave of energy intensified.  There's a cinematic battle.  Then we get folded....

Item Durability

Item Quality Items come in three grades: Superior: masterwork items, four notches.  They usually cost ten times the normal cost of such items.  Most magic items are always made from masterwork base items.  They may provide a minor intrinsic non-magical bonus (+1 to hit for weapons, a reduction of 1 to armor item penalties, or a +2 on tool use checks). Standard: a typical item, three notches. Poor: a poor quality item, two notches.  They have a -1 penalty (-1 to damage for weapons, -1 AC for armor, or -2 on tool use checks for items). Notches Notches represent wear and tear equipment has taken.  They affect performance in the following ways: Weapons Odd notches (first, third, etc.) inflict a -1 penalty to damage. Even notches (second, fourth, etc.) inflict a cumulative -1 penalty to hit. Armor Odd notches inflict a -1 penalty to checks due to damage. Even  notches inflict a cumulative -1 penalty to AC. Items This requires some interpretation by the GM. In...

RPG Blog Carnival: Beyond Vancian Magic

Hello Friends! I'm thrilled to be hosting December's RPG Blog Carnival topic, Beyond Vancian Magic ! I'm not a hater, but I'll admit I prefer different systems being different, and clerical and magic user magic systems are basically the same.   I'm looking forward to seeing your interesting takes and contributions on evolving past that kind of magic system.  While I chose this topic about half a year ago, it's come up recently on r/osr, in the post Vancian Magic - What It Is How It Works and Where Did It Come From? Here are some ideas to get you started if you don't already have something in mind: Creating entirely new magic systems, or emulating those of other works, such as those by Brandon Sanderson or Jim Butcher. Spellcasting based on the undead turning table, as illustrated by ktrey of d4 Caltrops suggested using in Alternative Spell Casting . Expand on existing the existing "Vancian" system: Make spells truly Vancian, so that they a...

Rifts (SWADE) - Terror on the Dark Frontier, sessions 0-2

So a few weeks ago, some people I used to play RPGs with reached out to me about bringing the band back together.  Once we slayed the scheduling demon, we figured out what we could play.  We settled on Rifts , using the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition. Rifts being Rifts , just assume trigger warnings of an awful post-apocalyptic world with demons and fascists apply. Session 0 We made characters.  Here's the list, starting with my characer, Tony: Anthony "Loco" Riaz (SAMAS pilot) - Ruins gang survivor, captured and raised by the Coalition, now late 20s, Fugitive SAMAS pilot from CS El Dorado, wanted for stealing a SAMAS suit with some vibrosword upgrades, getting in trouble with, whom it turns out, was the Colonel's wife.  Fleeing north towards Castle Refuge, he ran short on supplies while evading Coalition supplies, and got dehydrated, before being rescued by.... Layla Lacoi (DB Mystic) - A tall dimensional mystic being with a bit of a catfish face.  She heale...
